The Old Man of Hoy, located on the west coast of the Isle of Hoy (part of the Orkney archipelago) is reached by a moderate hike from Rackwick Bay, itself a stunning part of Scotland’s coast. I’ve always wanted to visit the Old Man, since learning about the 450-foot-tall sea stack in primary school. Finally being able to do so felt like a pilgrimage to one of Scotland’s icons, made all the more special by the weather, the colours of the sea and coast and the difficulty in getting to the edge of Hoy from the Scottish mainland.
